ICEMAN
I am looking for the "O" ring size for rebuilding the tailwheel strut on a PT-22. Thought I would get the ring before getting into it.
cnehus
The strut does not have an o ring inside. Rope seal is used at the upper gland nut the same as the main gear struts for sealing. The strut only has oil, spring and piston inside. The piston has no outside sealing device, fluid is metered via the piston from one side to the other to cause the damping from the spring. any leakage from the strut is caused by the roap seal under the gland nut. The gland nut can be tightened to help seal, if that fails the rope seal will need replacement. They all seem to weep a bit and should be serviced yearly with oil. cnehus
Just posted new style V Ring P/Ns on the Tech Resources form. Did one a week or so ago and it seems to work fine. Took a bit of work to extract the strut from the housing due to the spacer beeing tight under all the packing stack. Used a little heat and the strut/piston as a slide hammer and it came right out.
