Sadly, the report of a PT going down into a cornfield by Brussels, IL, is correct. The good news is that both the pilots on-board (lauri and I) were not injured and both walked away. Cause of the incident was loss of the #3 cylinder which later was determined to be seperation of the piston from the rod. Best guess is that the piston pin boss broke ayay from the piston and that one or more pieces became loged in the engines internal structure causing the engine to stop abruptly. There wern't many options but to fly the plane all the way in.

The corn was the higest we have ever seen (8-9 feet tall) in our lives. On the positive side it proved to be a good cushion, absorbing the energy of the aircraft and keeping the plane from slamming as hard as it could have when she flipped over.

Damage to the plane is substantial but it is rebuildable. Biggest problem is the ripples in the forward skins between #2 and #3 bulkheads. Tail cone is destroyed but not the empennage. Wings suffered some leading edge damage but are still intact. Stub wings are dented but easily repairable. Landing gear is in real good shape.

Re-skinning the fuselage and making a new tail cone will be the challange. Because of the time to make these repairs we are looking for a project which has a good fuselage we can switch parts on or complete the project over the winter. We'll keep everything else until I retire in a couple of years and then build another. Second option is to look at purchasing another PT-22, soon.

Does anyone know of a project or just a fuselage that's available? Or recommendations on someone interested in re-skinning our fuselage. How about what's for sale as a replacement?
